An attorney representing former Statesboro police major Scott Brunson said he plans to file an appeal Friday on his client’s behalf.

Brunson, the highest ranking officer in the department under public safety director Wendell Turner, was terminated from his position April 10, but city officials have not released details of his firing, citing the ongoing open case as reasons for not revealing that information, said Jeff Grant, human resources director for the city. “This is an active, pending case and I cannot comment.”

Statesboro Mayor Jan Moore and Statesboro Police Cpl. Justin Samples, public relations spokesman for the department, have also declined comment for the same reasons.

Dan Snipes, who represents Brunson, said the 25-year veteran of the Statesboro Police Department had retained his services and they would file an appeal to the termination before the end of the day.

The appeal will be presented to interim city manager Robert Cheshire, and a hearing should be scheduled sometime next week, he said.

Brunson, a FBI National Academy graduate, held the department’s highest position after former chief Stan York’s position was eliminated and former major J.R. Holloway retired. Both the police chief and Statesboro fire chief position were eliminated in 2010 when Turner’s position was created.

After the police chief’s position was eliminated, Holloway, the first black officer to lead the department, was promoted to the rank of commander, He retired a short time later.

City officials said at the time the move would save the city money, but the fire chief position was later reinstated and is now held by Chief Tim Grams The police chief position remains defunct.
