Following the success of the "Steak and Burger Dinner" at the Boys and Girls Club in September, Mike Backus was thinking about another idea for a fundraiser. As director of development, Backus decided to approach the club's Board of Directors with something new.
"I thought about a raffle for a car," Backus said. "I went to the board and they gave me the go ahead to see if I could make it work."
Backus spoke with his friends Cleve and Venus White, who own Cleve White Nissan in Statesboro. The Whites agreed to donate a 2008 Nissan Rogue for the raffle.
"Growing up in Statesboro, Cleve and I would have loved to have had a place like the Boys and Girls Club to go to after school," said Venus White, who sits on the club's board. "We are happy to help. The club does wonderful and important work for the young people here."
So, if you want to drive a Rogue, Nissan's cross between an SUV and a car, the Boys and Girls Club raffle gives you a chance. And a pretty good one, at that. Raffle tickets are $50 a piece, but only 1,000 total tickets will be sold.
"I think a raffle ticket would make a great Christmas present," Venus White said.
Backus said tickets have sold well.
"We have set a tentative deadline of December 31 to end ticket sales," Backus said. "But we may extend that if we need to."
Backus praised the Whites for donating the car.
"Obviously, giving a car is a big deal," Backus said. "But Cleve and Venus do so many things behind the scenes that nobody hears about to not only help the Boys and Girls Club, but the whole community."
Backus said tickets are available all around town.
"Give me a call. I'll make sure you get one," Backus said.
The club offers programs that teach youth about character and leadership, education and careers, technology, health and life skills, sports and fitness and the arts, according to Web site www.bgcbulloch.org.
