Statesboro Police arrested a woman Monday they said was involved in an internal theft at a local pharmacy for about four years.

Carolyn Couch, 48, Chestnut Oak Lane, was charged Monday with felony theft by taking, said Statesboro Police Det. Ken Scott.

Police were notified Monday by Walker Pharmacy affiliates about an ongoing issue, taking place over the past "three or four years," where Couch was "collecting prescriptions and never ringing them up," he said.

The prescriptions were legitimate prescriptions for her and her family, Scott said.

While the case remains under investigation, the totals have surpassed $8,000 and could reach a higher amount, he said.

Couch, wife of Bulloch County Manager Tom Couch, was taken to the Bulloch County Jail after her arrest, and was later released on a $2,000 property bond, according to jail records.

Tom Couch, who has been manager since 2004, said he would handle the matter on a personal level with his family, leaving the rest to police.

"I can only affirm that upon becoming aware of this matter at 2:30 this afternoon, it's now in the hands of law enforcement and the legal authorities," he said. "Meanwhile, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment at this time as the rest is a personal matter that I must reconcile with my wife and family."
