The American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90, with assistance from the 2015 Leadership Bulloch class, will hold an "All-American Cookout" on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to honor veterans in the Bulloch County area.
The exclusive event is for past and present military service members and their immediate families only. It will be held at the American Legion Post on Rucker Lane off of Highway 301 South and will have fun for the whole family. Live entertainment will be provided by Ryan and Patty Kelly, and there will be inflatables and face-painting for children, food and the chance to win a host of door prizes, including a cooler, charcoal grill, one-year membership to the Averitt Center for the Arts and more.
American Legion Commander Terry Preslar said that one hope for the event is to get younger veterans involved in the legion, as most of the local members are predominately 60 years of age or older.
"We're trying to get Gulf War veterans involved," Preslar said. "Currently, our Korean and Vietnam veterans are the oldest. There are still a few World War II veterans, but not too many."
Besides monthly meetings for legion members on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. and rounds of Bingo, open to the public with cash prizes, every Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Dexter Allen Post 90 of the American Legion serves the community through participation with nursing homes and VA hospitals, Vet Dogs, Boy Scouts, Boys' State, Wreaths Across America and cemetery flags during the holidays.
The event is sponsored in part by the 2015 Leadership Bulloch class. Spearheaded by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Bulloch seeks to encourage, develop and provide community leadership in Bulloch. The American Legion is a member of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce.
Though preregistration is not required, those planning to participate are encouraged to visit and sign up at facebook.com/DexterAllenPost90 in order to provide an estimated head count, and participants are asked to bring proof of service to the event for registration.
