A burglar caught in the act by homeowners attacked them with a baseball bat, but they were able to fight back and subdue him until deputies came to take him to jail.
Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Eldora Road in Ellabell around 1 a.m. Sunday, where residents of the home were holding Kenneth Allen Sykes Jr., 20, Big Buck Crossing, Ellabell, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.
The call initially went through Bryan County 911, but when law enforcement determined the home was in Bulloch County, dispatchers routed the call to Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies. Officers from both agencies responded to the scene, he said.
Once there, they learned that the home owners surprised Sykes when they returned home and he attacked them with a baseball bat. When they victims fought back, Sykes suffered minor injuries and was subdued until deputies arrived, he said.
Sykes’ injuries did not require medical attention, and “no other persons were hurt,” he said.
When deputies searched Sykes, they found a knife on his person.
“Given these circumstances, Sykes was transported to the Bulloch County Jail and charged with … burglary, aggravated assault due to his use of the bat, and … possession of a knife during the commission of a crime,” Anderson said.
Sykes is being held without bond.
