The 20th Annual Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards Banquet will feature Carl E. Swearingen as keynote speaker.
The invitation-only gala will be held March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Nessmith-Lane Building on the campus of Georgia Southern University.
The Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards, hosted by the Statesboro Herald and supported by numerous local businesses and individuals, honors those who serve others with compassion and dedication without expectation of compensation or credit.
Hundreds of area citizens have been honored with the award. In addition to several Service to Mankind awards, the Statesboro Herald recognizes a Humanitarian of the Year, and select others are presented Lifetime Achievement awards.

Swearingen retired from the BellSouth Corporation in 2001 after his promotion in 1998 to senior vice president and corporate secretary.
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue appointed Swearingen in July 2006, to the State Board of the Department of Technical and Adult Education. Swearingen was elected chairman of the board in July and represents the 6th Congressional District.
Swearingen began his telecommunications career in 1972 with Southern Bell in Tucker, Ga., serving as an office manager and working in various management positions throughout metro Atlanta, Valdosta and Augusta.
In 1977 he became general public relations manager for Southern Bell in Georgia, and in 1985 became assistant vice president – public affairs for BellSouth Telecommunications Inc. in Charlotte, N.C.
In 1989 he was named president of BellSouth Telecommunications in Georgia, and served in that position for nine years.
Swearingen, a University of Georgia graduate, is a native of Parkersburg, W.V. He earned bachelor and master degrees in journalism in 1967 and 1969, respectively. He also received a masters of science degree in management from MIT in 1985.
As a University of Georgia Air Force ROTC cadet, Swearingen was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. He served on active duty as an Air Intelligence Officer in Cam Rahn Bay and Saigon, South Vietnam and at Homestead AFB, Florida. He received the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.
Swearingen has a history of active involvement in community affairs. In addition to being a member of the Atlanta Kiwanis Club, he served on the boards of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the University of Georgia Foundation, and Berry College.
He has been chairman of Governor Miller’s Advisory Council on Science and Technology, chairman of the University of Georgia National Alumni Association, chairman of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, chairman of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, and chairman of the National Board of Advisors of the Museum of Aviation located at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center.
Swearingen's lengthy list of accomplishments include involvement in numerous fund raising projects including the United Way, Boy Scouts, American Cancer Society, and Zoo Atlanta.
He has also been involved in politics, having served as the chairman for Perdue’s Transition Team following the Governor’s election in Nov., 2002, and was appointed as Perdue's special advisor on military affairs in May, 2003.
Perdue also appointed him to the Commission for a New Georgia in June,2003 and to the Technical College System of Georgia Board in August 2006. Swearingen began serving as Chairman of the Board in July 2007.
