"Surfin' USA: Greatest Hits of the Beach Boys" hit the Emma Kelly Theater Saturday to take the evening's audience on a journey back in time to summer days, good friends and great music. Rockin' guitar intros got guests out of their seats and grooving to classic Beach Boy hits including "I Get Around," Kokomono," "Good Vibrations," "Don't Worry Baby" and, of course, "Surfin' USA."
In addition to the performance, the seventh annual Connect Statesboro Swimsuit Contest began the event with an on-stage presentation of the contest's nominees in their swimsuits. The audience was encouraged to vote for their favorite contestant during intermission. At the conclusion of the show, Anastasia James, a Georgia Southern University student pursuing a degree in theater education and an Art After Hours instructor at the Averitt Center for the Arts, was announced as this year's contest winner. She was invited to take the stage with the band and even joined them in singing the last number, "Fun Fun Fun."
The funds raised through contest voting will benefit the Averitt Center's Youth Scholarship Fund and Bulloch County's Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society.
