Former Statesboro defensive lineman Josh Thompson said he’s looking forward to this weekend’s NFL Draft, but isn’t expecting anything major to happen.
“I’m not expecting anything — just trying to keep my options open,” said Thompson. “If I get drafted it’ll be late, maybe sixth, seventh round, if not then hopefully someone will pick me up as a free agent and I’ll try to go where whoever wants me.”
Thompson graduated from Statesboro in 2003 and spent the next five seasons at Auburn. Thompson led the Tigers in tackles in 2007 with a combined 67 stops. He also had 4 1⁄2 tackles-for-loss, mostly from the noseguard position. He worked out at Auburn’s Pro Day alongside his teammates to see where he stood.
“It went real good” he said. “I’m not the fastest guy in the world, but I weighed in at 304 and my position drills went really good. I had some good feedback and it was just a good day overall.”
Nicknamed “Stump”, Thompson won the Eddie Welch Attitude and Effort Award after Auburn’s spring season in 2007. He plans to wait out this weekend at home in Statesboro
“I will be right here in the ‘Boro at my house,” he said. “We’ll probably just grill out with some close family and just chill out. It’s just another day and hopefully it’ll turn out to be a good day”
