Georgia Southern has hired Mark Byington as the new men's basketball head coach, a source close to the program said on Friday.
Byington is an assistant coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Prior to joining the Virginia Tech staff for the 2012-13 season, Byington was the interim coach at College of Charleston, where he replaced Bobby Cremins, who stepped down midway through the 2011-12 season after citing physical limitations.
Byington coached at Charleston for six seasons under Cremins, and nine total with the Cougars. He has also coached as an assistant at Virginia and Hargrave Military Academy.
Byington played college basketball at UNC Wilmington.
According to a press release issued by GSU officials, the announcement of Byington's hire at Georgia Southern will be made Monday at 3:30 p.m., in the Bishop Field House.
