BROOKLET — Brittany Hood scored four times as the Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets (9-3, 3-3 Area 3-AA/A) avenged a March loss in Sylvania with a 4-0 area win over visiting Screven County Tuesday at Fred Shaver Field.
The Lady Gamecocks’ first win as a program came against the Yellow Jackets back in 2003, and SCHS hadn’t beaten them again until earlier this season.
“I kind of fired up (the team) in the locker room,” said Southeast Bulloch coach Aimee Civalier. “(Screven) flat out out-hearted us and beat us last time. I asked them to make a statement, and they made a statement.”
Hood got to work early. After her first goal gave SEB a 1-0 lead, she took a pass from teammate Ashlin Reid and punched it in to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-0.
Hood, who scored the team’s only goal in the earlier 3-1 loss to SCHS, completed her hat trick in just the 18th minute, taking on Gamecock keeper Christi Boston one-on-one and pounding it into the back of the net.
“(Hood, the Jackets’ leading scorer) keeps wanting to come back and play defensively. I can’t keep her up on the line,” Civalier said. “I said, ‘Brittany, after you score three goals I’ll let you go where you want to.’ After she scored three goals, she said, ‘Can I go back on defense now?’ She naturally plays defense. She likes to kind of come back and win the ball — play the ball forward.”
Her fourth goal came in the 32nd minute after another one-on-one situation ended with the ball resting in the back-left corner of the goal.

“(Jacket keeper Kacey Jones) was feeling a little sick,” said Civalier. “She said she was feeling a little light-headed so there was no sense keeping her in in a 4-0 game, and Brittany’s an athlete. She’s played goal before, but it was the first time for us.”
With Hood guarding the net, the Jackets continued the offensive intensity.
They saw tries from Tiffany Rowe, Amy Girardeau, Cassie Bray and DeAnn Lewis. The closest SEB came to a second-half score was a shot in the 51st minute that barely missed wide left.
Boston recorded seven saves for the Gamecocks.
The Jackets take on second-place Calvary on the road Thursday, and with only the top two area teams getting bids to the state playoffs, the game could get the Jackets one step closer to post-season play.
“I told them this is the number one step right here, get a win (against Screven),” said Civalier. “We had to take care of business today, and then we’ve got Calvary on Thursday.”
Calvary dropped a 4-0 loss to No. 1 Savannah Country Day, and still has to play them again. If the Jackets can take care of business Thursday and SCD remains undefeated, the playoff spot will come down to tiebreakers.
