Yellow Jackets on four-game winning streak

GARDEN CITY — With the regular season winding down Southeast Bulloch is peaking at the right time.
After losing their first four games of the season the Yellow Jackets (4-4, 4-1) made it four straight wins Friday night with a 55-6 win over winless Groves (0-8, 0-5) at Garden City Stadium in a Region 3-AAA game. Southeast Bulloch can clinch a berth in the state playoffs if unbeaten region leader Jenkins can beat Savannah High this afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets, Beach and Windsor Forest are all 4-1 in region play and SEB’s remaining games are with those two teams. After today Jenkins (7-0, 4-0) will also have games with Beach and Windsor Forest.
A Savannah High loss would eliminate the Blue Jackets in the region race and assure Windsor Forest, Beach and SEB playoff berths. The remaining games would be for seeding. The Yellow Jackets would earn a No. 2 seed and an opening round game at home if they win out.
“Our first four games, even in defeat, our underlying message was to learn how to compete,” SEB coach Steve Pennington said. “Those first four games gave us evidence we could do that, and it made us tougher and it’s paid off in this four-game stretch.
“We can’t be concerned about our opponent, only ourselves. We’re making progress each week up the ladder.”
Chase Walker ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Jackets who also got two touchdown passes from Blaize Minnick on his only two attempts of the game. Minnick connected with Tyler Bailey on 38 and 39-yard bombs, the latter coming with 14 seconds left in the first half following a Rebel fumble.
Walker, who entered the game with 1,112 yards rushing on the season, scored on runs of 14, 5 and 60 yards. Jaleel Hodge had a 31-yard scoring run in the first quarter, Jontrell Wells had a 75-yard kickoff return and Jay Way added a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Southeast Bulloch finished the game with 353 yards total offense, 276 on the ground, on only 39 plays. The Rebels were limited to 117 yards and they had the ball for 29 plays.
