The Screven County Gamecocks picked up their first win of the season in the region opener, beating Jefferson County 31-19 in a back-and-forth affair with a wild fourth quarter.
Joseph Gray of Screven returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown just 2:45 left in the game to put Screven ahead, 29-19. After a series of events left Jefferson with a second-and-65 from their own five yard line, Willis Brookings and Jaron Cousack sacked the Jefferson quarterback for a safety.
Jeremy Johnson led a potent Gamecock ground attack with 138 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 28 carries. Darius Wright chipped in 70 yards on 13 carries.
The two teams traded first half scores with Screven getting a one-yard run from Aikeem Mingle. Johnson’s first touchdown came after an Alex Mingle fumble recovery. The teams were dadlocked at 13-13 at intermission.
Johnson’s second touchdown and first of two two-point conversion runs gave Screven a 21-13 lead. Jefferson scored just two minutes later, but failed on a two-point conversion to make the score 21-19.
