Local Roundup: Lady Blue Devils eliminated

LOCUST GROVE — The Statesboro girls put up a fight, but came up just short, losing 3-2 to Locust Grove Tuesday in the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs.
The Lady Blue Devils took the lead on a goal by Tori Thompson 22 minutes into the game. Statesboro held the advantage into halftime, but the Wildcats eventually prevailed.
Locust Grove stormed back in the second half, scoring at the 30 and 21 minute marks, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats went ahead 3-1 after a controversial goal in which SHS goalkeeper Destinee Lanier appeared to have the ball stopped on the goal line.
Tess Newton found the back of the net to make it 3-2, but the Devils weren’t able to even the score before time expired.
The loss ended the high school careers of Thompson, Sarah Brown, Kristen Reichard and Keiyonna Gusby, but the second round appearance also marked the best showing for the Lady Devils during the seniors’ tenure at Statesboro High.
