LYONS — Bulloch Academy scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns in a stunning 28-12 come-from-behind victory over Robert Toombs Christian Academy Friday night.
Robert Toombs manhandled Bulloch for three full quarters with its huge offensive and defensive linemen. But, for the third week in a row, the Crusaders took a lead into the final period and couldn’t hold it as they fell to 0-3.
The Gators (3-0) were down 12-7 headed into the fourth quarter but scored 21 unanswered points for the dramatic win.
Midway through the final 12 minutes, junior quarterback Loy Waters ran the option with tailback Jaylen Evans. Waters threw the ball back to Evans and the pigskin bounced on the ground. The speedy senior scooped up the ball, turned the corner and raced 56 yards for the score with 7:49 left in the game.
On RTCA’s next possession, Crusader quarterback Chase Thompson put the ball on the ground and senior Dillan Finch came up with the recovery at the BA 14. Two plays later, junior speedster Harrison Averitt blasted through the line and scampered 87 yards to give the Gators a 21-12 lead with 4:23 left.
The snakebite Crusaders put the ball on the ground again on their next series and Finch was there for the recovery. Two plays later, senior Chris Young blasted in from 11 yards out for the 28-12 lead.
RTCA’s fourth-quarter fumbles were two of four that the Crusaders coughed up on the night.
Averitt, who had a three-yard TD in the second quarter, rushed for 134 yards on 12 carries while Evans had 114 on just three totes. Young had 85 on 11 carries. On the night, Bulloch rushed for 343 yards.
Defensively, both Sapp and Codi Johnson notched nine tackles. Finch recovered two fumbles while Sapp and Waters had one each. RTCA had 197 yards rushing and Thompson was 7-of-9 passing for 84 yards.
Bulloch begins Region 1-AAA play next Friday night, hosting Tiftarea Academy.
