CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Rory McIlroy may not have a home in Charlotte N.C. but he is proving he owns Quail Hollow. Sunday McIlroy closed things out with a 6-under 65 beating Xander Schauffele by five shots in claiming his record fourth Wells Fargo Championship title.
"Quail Hollow, Charlotte in general has been really good to me over my career and this is just another great day to sort of add to all the rest of them." McIlroy said.
McIlroy went on a run playing the final 11 holes at six under which included a double bogey on the final hole. Known more for his length off the tee it was McIlroy’s short game that helped him to his 26th career victory as he needed only 25 putts with 10 of those being longer than 10 feet.
“I know what I’m capable of,” McIlroy said. “Whenever I fire on all cylinders, this is what I can produce.”
The victim of McIlroy’s steamrolling was Xander Schauffele who probably wins in any other year. For the second straight year Schauffele has to settle for second place. He entered the weekend with a four-shot lead and has not won on the PGA Tour since 2022.
Schauffelle did not play poorly, but even when he made birdies on 10 and 15 he lost ground to McIlroy who birdies both holes.
“He’s Rory McIlroy, you know,” Schauffele said. “He hits it 350 yards in the air downwind and he has shorter clubs into firm greens than anyone else. When he’s on, he’s on.”
Going on a hot streak at Quail Hollow in the final-round is nothing new for McIlroy. He shot a final-round 62 when he won his first PGA Tour title here in 2010 and then broke his own course record to win by seven strokes in 2021.
“I’ve been sort of banging this drum for the last few years, but I’m a way better player now than I was back then,” McIlroy said. “I haven’t had the major record to back that up, but I’ve done everything else there is to do in the game since 2014. The only thing I need to do is get another major. You know, a win like this going into the PGA Championship next week is a good way to prep for that.”
Speaking of places McIlroy has had success, this week’s PGA Championship is at Valhalla where he won the PGA Championship in 2014.
