Lady Gamecocks go for title today

    The Statesboro boys basketball team advanced to the championship of the region 3-AAAA tournament with a 51-38 win over Wayne County Friday at the Academy of Richmond County.
    The Devils (17-10) led by just three at halftime, but stretched their lead to 15 at one point in the third quarter.
    Statesboro then survived a furious fourth quarter rally by the Yellow Jackets in which WCHS (21-8) got to within six at 36-30 before SHS pulled back away.
    Justin Houston led SHS with 18 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Jared Houston’s 13 points and nine from Eric Ferguson.
    Statesboro will play in the championship game today at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Academy of Richmond County-Ware County.

Lady Gamecocks advance
    Kadedra Evans had 13 points and the Screven County Lady Gamecocks rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Swainsboro 39-37 Friday in the semifinals of the region 3-AA tournament.
    Screven (23-4) led 15-4 in the first quarter, but allowed the Lady Tigers to tie the game at 19 by the end of the half and take a 31-27 lead at the end of three.
    The Lady Gamecocks will play Laney tonight at 7 p.m. for the region 3-AA title.

Lady Devils beaten
    The Statesboro Lady Blue Devils never got off on the right foot Friday, eventually losing 61-36 to Greenbrier in the semifinals of the region 3-AAAA tournament.
    Monnette Bennett had eight points for SHS (16-10) who will play Effingham County today at 2 p.m. for state tournament seeding.

Screven can’t top Swainsboro
    The Screven County Gamecocks fell down early to Swainsboro in Friday’s region 3-AA semifinal and could never come quite back in a 76-70 loss.
    Dajuwan Carter and Antrjuan Albright had 18 points each for SCHS while Jamez Colbert added13 for SCHS who will face Westside today at Josey in the consolation game.

Lady Eagles fall to SCD
    The Jenkins County Lady Eagles were sent to region 3-A’s consolation game with a 54-38 loss to Savannah Country Day on Friday.
