Local Roundup: Portal boys win again

    PORTAL — The Portal boys improved to 20-1 with a 71-56 home win over Richmond Hill Tuesday.
    David Buchannon led four Panthers in double figures with 19 points, while Mario Farris added 16 and Steven Cox and T.J. Busby had 10 apiece. For Richmond Hill, Chakiris Moss turned in a game-high 26.
    The Panthers host Jenkins County for senior night Friday with the girls game beginning at 6.

Gators sweep on the road
    SAVANNAH — Kaylee Lanier scored 24 points, and Addie Reddick added 18 and five 3-pointers to lift the Bulloch Academy girls (12-9, 4-1) to a 62-55 win at Memorial Day School Tuesday.
    Thanks to 20 points each from Darion Carter and Arne Benker, Bulloch’s boys also won 67-65. The Gators (13-6, 4-1) hit 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
    Bulloch Academy plays Friday at Tattnall Square beginning at 6 p.m.

SEB rifle gets first win over Statesboro
    For the first time since beginning its rifle team 16 years ago, Southeast Bulloch outshot Statesboro 877-746 Tuesday for the win.
    SEB top shooters were — Sean Miller (265), Cory Rodriquez (213), Douglas Morrison (240) and Alissa Gordon (159).
    Statesboro was led by Cameron Hendrix (200), Curtis Black (194), Kelfie Ward (178)  and Jake Redwood (174).
    Southeast Bulloch hosts Groves Thursday.

BA JV splits with EBA
     Bulloch Academy’s junior varsity basketball teams split against Edmund Burke Academy Monday night.
    In the spirited girls’ game, Taylor Collins scored a game-high 14 points and Haley Burke added 10 as the Lady Gators pounded the Lady Spartans 36-20.
    In the boys’ game, Jordan Herrington took control for the Gators, scoring a game-high 14 points but Bulloch connected on just 8-of-21 free throws and wound up losing by a bucket, 32-20.
    In the opener, BA (8-2) never trailed in the game but had to beat back fierce rallies from the visitors from Waynesboro. For the Lady Spartans, Ansleigh Dickey had eight points and Amanda Bragg added seven.
    In the finale, the Gators (4-6) fell behind after the opening quarter but cut the EBA lead to four, 22-18, by halftime.
    Bulloch outscored the Spartans 9-4 in the third for a 27-26 after three quarters but the visitors connected on their freethrows in the final quarter while the Gators did not. Brandon Sharpe led EBA with 11 points and Dawson Atkinson added nine.
    Both BA junior varsity squads travel to Louisville to take on Thomas Jefferson Academy Thursday night and end the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against Frederica Academy. The Region 2-AA junior varsity tournament will be held on Feb. 7 and 9 at Trinity Christian School in Dublin.


GSU golf finishes 14th
    TUCSON, Ariz. — The Georgia Southern golf team finished up competition at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate, Tuesday evening, at the par-71,
6,793-yard Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
    After Monday’s first round and partial second round (suspended due to darkness), the Eagles picked up where they left off and finished up the third and final round tied for 14th place, carding a total 35-over 887.
    The Eagles finished 39 strokes better than Long Beach State. Taking the team title was No. 12 Tennessee, carding a 20-under 832, three strokes ahead of No. 40 UNLV.
    Pacing the Eagles was junior Drew Lethem, who shot a final round 2-under 69 and finished the tournament in 18th place, carding a total even-par 213.  Lethem’s 4-under 67 first round was one stroke shy of tying his career low round.
    UCLA’s Kevin Chappell took home the individual medal, shooting a 15-under 198 and finishing seven strokes better than the next individuals.
    GSU sophomore Spencer Fulford finished the tournament 10-over 223, tied for 49th place, and junior Ryan Zabroske tied for 53rd place shooting an 11-over 224.
    Freshman Logan Blondell  finished the tournament tied for 69th place, carding a 14-over 227, while teammate Jordan Johnstun carded a 27-over 240, finishing in 82nd place.
    The Eagles return to the links to compete at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Saturday, Feb. 9 through Sunday, Feb. 10.

SEB Sporting Clays Tourney
    The Southeast Bulloch Academic Booster Club will sponser a Sporting Clays Tournament on Feb. 2 at the Bay Gall and Sporting Clays.
    Lunch will be provided and prizes for first, second and third will be given in two divisions, youth and adult.

SBCPRD Hoops scores
    The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department youth basketball scores from last week were as follows:
    In the Tiny Minor league, the Mercury beat the Shock 34-22.  The Sparks beat the Suns 36-14,  and the Mystics took the Storm at 26-18. The Comets overcame the Sun 48-16, while the Mystics beat the Shock 35-12. The Sparks scored 30 points to the Storm's 28 for an upset on Saturday.
    The Mystics are the top team in standings for the Tiny Minor League followed by the Comets, Mercury, Sparks, Shock, Storm and Sun.
    In the Midget league, the Pistons scored 21 to the Nets' 17 while the Suns beat the Lakers, 22-14.
    The Pistons scored 32 to the Laker's 19, and the Suns pulled a win against the Nets at a narrow 29-28 on Saturday.
    The Pistons are the top team in standings for the Midget League followed by the Suns, Nets and Lakers.
    In the Minor League, the Bobcats scored 26 to the Raptor's 12, while the Timberwolves beat the Knicks 32-28.
    The Rockets beat the Magic 22-18, the Warriors took the win against the Celtics with 28-26 and the Jazz beat the Hawks with 27-23 on Saturday.
    The Jazz are the top team in standings for the Minor League, followed by the Knicks, Timberwolves, Hawks, Bobcats, Warriors, Rockets, Celtics, Raptors, and Magic.

PHS/SHS game rescheduled
    The rematch between the Portal Panthers and the Statesboro Blue Devils has been moved from Jan. 22 in Portal to Feb. 9 in Southeast Bulloch’s new facility in Brooklet.
    Each school will be alotted 500 tickets, which will be available for advanced purchase only. The tickets will cost $7 and will go on sale on Feb. 5. They will be available at the front offices at each school. Nobody may enter the game without an advanced ticket.

GSU Men’s soccer tryouts
    The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team is holding walk-on tryouts from Monday, Feb. 4 to Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 at the Soccer Stadium.
    Start time for Feb. 4 is 4:30 p.m.  The next day’s event is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
    Potential student-athletes are expected to bring the following: cleats, running shoes, insurance card and a completed physical (Health Services can provide this documentation).
    Players arriving without an Insurance Card or Physical forms will not be allowed to participate. There will be no exceptions to this policy.

SEB Pack the Gym night
    Southeast Bulloch’s game with Jefferson County on Friday will be Pack the Gym night.
    All elementary and middle school students will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
    The Lady Yellow Jackets play at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7:30 in SEB’s new state-of-the-art facility.
