BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch girls track and field team topped Statesboro and Claxton Wednesday.
The Lady Jackets totaled 80 points to Statesboro’s 60 and Claxton’s 30.
Tren Rogers won the 300-meter hurdles for SHS and Candace Pierce placed second for SEB.
Sarah Burgess (SEB) won the 3200m and Jamie Bohannon (SEB) was second. The two finished the same way in the 1600m as well.
Sarah Herndon (SEB) was first in the shotput and discus and Brittany Key (SEB) was second in the discus throw.
Raven Thomas (SHS) was first in the long jump and Alesha Mercer (SEB) was second.

Brown, Atwood honored by coaches
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Having received recognition by the Southern Conference media, Monday, Georgia Southern seniors Shawnda Atwood and Tiffany Brown were also honored by the league’s coaches. The senior duo was named to the all-Southern Conference team by the coaches, it was announced, today, by the league offices.
Earlier, Atwood and Brown were also honored by the Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) as members of the all-SoCon second team.
Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) finished up the regular season as one of the conference’s best scorers and rebounders, tallying 10.0 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, numbers that both ranked 12th in the league. She paced the team in rebounds per game, and was second on the team in points. She claims five career double-doubles, including a pair this season.
For Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) the honor by the coaches is her second such award during her career, having received the same award at the close of the 2006-07 regular season.
Both leading the team and ranking seventh in the league in points per game (11.5), Brown fulfilled her preseason all-SoCon honors, becoming the program’s 17th player to notch 1,000 points and by helping lead the team to its best record (17-12) so far since the 2002-03 season (20-10). She currently tallies 1,144 points, which ranks 13th all-time, while also recording 167 career steals, seventh-best in the school record book.
GSU softball sweeps Presbyterian
Georgia Southern’s school-record shutout streak ended but the Eagles got enough offense to sweep a softball doubleheader from Presbyterian Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The wins are Georgia Southern’s seventh straight, the longest by the program since 2004, and improve the team’s record to 16-10. Presbyterian drops to 7-10.
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) shut down the PC offense on three hits in game one. She struck out 10 and walked four to record the team’s sixth consecutive shutout, extending the school record.
The Eagles put single runs across in innings one, two and five. Sophomore Lindsey Hopkins (McDonough, Ga.) recorded two hits in four at bats and scored a run. Junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) went 2-for-2 at the plate.
GSU went on top 2-0 through four in game two on RBI singles from sophomore Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) and junior Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.).
The Blue Hose were finally able to dent the scoreboard in the sixth on back-to-back walks and a single from Jenny Box. Both walks and hit came with two out. The run allowed was GSU’s first in 48 innings, dating back to a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Feb. 24.
Georgia Southern got a much-needed insurance run in its half of the sixth thanks to a RBI triple from sophomore Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.). Presbyterian answered with an unearned run in the seventh but Side threw out pinch-runner Morgan White at third to end the game.
The Eagles won despite leaving 10 runners on base.
Freshman Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) earned the win (7-2) and allowed six hits and one earned run.
The Eagles return to action this weekend when they compete in the War Eagle Classic hosted by Auburn. Play begins Friday at 4 p.m.
Claxton throws out Jackets
BROOKELT — With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Claxton threw out the game-tying run at the plate on a sacrifice fly to beat Southeast Bulloch 6-5 Wednesday.
The Jackets (4-2) trailed 5-1 but scored four in the sixth. The Tigers scored once in the seventh to provide the final margin.
Matt Conner pitched five innings, striking out six and allowing two runs for SEB. Joe Wilson went 2-for-4 and Corey Ward was 2-for-3.
Southeast will open Region 3-AA play on Friday, hosting Screvn County at 5:30 p.m.

The Southeast Bulloch and Claxton junior varsity baseball teams tied 6-6 on Wednesday.
Nick Morris pitched a complete game for SEB and Jake Manahan went 2-for-3. Taylen Cassedy was also 2-for-3.

The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Hampton University Wednesday morning at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Doubles and singles victories from Emmanuel Nkoueleue and Borja Malet, Joris De Weerdt and Gregory Bekkers, and Matthew Sands led the Eagles to secure the win. Georgia Southern improved to 5-4 overall record and 1-0 in the Southern Conference, while Hampton fell to 1-6 overall, 0-1 in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference.
Georgia Southern picked up wins at all three seeds to claim the doubles point for the fourth time this season. Nkoueleue and Malet and De Weerdt and Bekkers were victorious over their opponents, 8-4, at the one and three seeds, respectively. Sands and Prins ousted their opponents, 8-3.
The Eagles’ success in doubles carried over to singles action, earning wins at five of six seeds. Georgia Southern cruised past Hampton in straight sets at one through four and six seeds. Picking up singles wins were Nkoueleue, De Weerdt, Bekkers, Malet and Sands.
Georgia Southern now looks to host conference foe Appalachian State on March 8. The match is slated to begin at noon.

The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team notched its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Pirates of Hampton 5-2 at the Hanner Tennis Complex.
The Eagles (7-4, 1-0 SoCon) have won seven of their last eight dual matches and improve their record to 5-1 at the Hanner Tennis Complex. Hampton falls to 0-6 on the season.
GSU used a complete team effort to earn the victory. Nine of Georgia Southern’s 10 student-athletes competed in the match against the Pirates.
The Eagles took the early advantage taking the doubles point from Hampton. Juniors Jessica Matlosz (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) extended their unbeaten streak to 6-0. The pair knocked off Syreeta Thompson and Kelli Young by an 8-5 decision from the No. 2 position. Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) and Kelli Helms (Cairo, Ga.) were successful from the No. 3 slot defeating Janelle Small and Maya Morgan 8-2.
In singles play, freshman Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) improved her dual record to 9-2, ousting Na-Yhun Baek in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 from the No. 1 seed. Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) posted her first win of the season from the No. 4 position downing Young 6-1, 6-0.
The Eagles are back on the hard-courts Sunday, March 9 as they head to Furman. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Miller to be at GSU
Gin Miller, world famous group fitness instructor who attended Georgia Southern in the mid-1970s, will be back on campus on Wednesday, March 12 to lead a “Spring Break Bodies” workout designed to burn fat and tone muscles.
The class will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Recreation Activity Center (RAC). Only RAC members or their guests are allowed to participate. Guest passes are $5 per day and they must be accompanied by a RAC member. RAC members may only bring two guests per day.
Miller attended Georgia Southern for two years starting in the Fall of 1974 and was on the gymnastics team. She stayed at Georgia Southern for two years while she studied business.
Miller has won numerous awards throughout her career, including the World Fitness Festival Innovation Award, being named as “one of the 25 fittest people in the world” by People Magazine in 1994 and being inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2006.
She is considered one of the industry’s top professionals and has more than two decades of experience. She was the creative force behind the “step revolution” and is considered by many to be the creator of step training, which laid the foundation for step aerobics.
Miller will also be back on campus again in June to lead a three-day training seminar for group fitness instructors. That event will be open to the public who want to take the class. A fee, which has yet to be determined, will be charged for the June class.

BA sporting clays tournament
The Bulloch Academy Booster Club invites sportsmen and women of all ages to test their shooting skills at a Sporting Clays tournament on Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Bay Gall Sporting Clays.
The main event is a 100-target competition with $300 going to the best shooter. Additional prize money goes to the second and third-place shooters and winners in the ladies, youth, BA alumni and BA parent divisions. There is a $100 entry fee for the event, which is a fundraiser for the BA Booster Club.
Other shooting competitions such as Five Stand, Long Bird and Wobble Trap will also be held. Entry fee is $10 per competition and prize money will be awarded to the winners.
The Boosters will also hold a general raffle, with tickets sold the day of the event, and a raffle for a four-wheeler. Tickets for the four-wheeler raffle are $10 and will be sold both prior to the event and on the day of the event.
Lunch will be provided by the Booster Club.

Georgia Southern University Athletics is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Class.
The Hall of Fame selection criteria includes: a 10-year eligibility moratorium for all student-athletes and five years for coaches and administrators. Nominees must also have made a significant contribution to the success of Georgia Southern Athletics.

Jacksonville 65, Mercer 57
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marcus Allen scored 19 points to lead Jacksonville University to a 65-57 victory over Mercer in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference basketball tournament at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena Wednesday afternoon.
The victory sends the Dolphins (16-12) into Friday evening’s semifinals against the winner of Thursday afternoon’s game between Gardner-Webb and Stetson.
Mark Hall led Mercer (11-18) with 15 points, while Shaddean Aaron added 11.
In addition to Allen, point guard Ben Smith scored 17 points for Jacksonville, including a perfect 10 of 10 at the free throw line. Aric Brooks also scored 12 points for the Dolphins.
Jacksonville was effective at the free throw line, making 23 of 30 shots at the line, compared to just 12 of 19 for the Bears.0
Jacksonville never trailed after an 11-0 run in the first half that stretched out over 6:50 and turned an 11-9 deficit into a 20-11 Dolphins lead with 5:48 to play before halftime.
The Dolphins slowly lengthened the lead in the second half, going up by as many as 14 points with 16:40 to play.
Jacksonville also won the turnover battle, forcing 18 Bears turnovers while committing just 10.

GSU Hall of Fame nominations
Georgia Southern University Athletics is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Class.
The Hall of Fame selection criteria includes: a 10-year eligibility moratorium for all student-athletes and five years for coaches and administrators. Nominees must also have made a significant contribution to the success of Georgia Southern Athletics.
Those wanting to nominate former Eagles can submit names via e-mail to Lanell VanLandingham at Lanellv@georgiasouthern.edu. Please include Hall of Fame Nomination in the subject line. The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 30.
The 2008 Hall of Fame Class will be inducted on September 26-27.
Jacksonville 65, Mercer 57
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marcus Allen scored 19 points to lead Jacksonville University to a 65-57 victory over Mercer in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference basketball tournament at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena Wednesday afternoon.
The victory sends the Dolphins (16-12) into Friday evening’s semifinals against the winner of Thursday afternoon’s game between Gardner-Webb and Stetson.
Mark Hall led Mercer (11-18) with 15 points, while Shaddean Aaron added 11.
In addition to Allen, point guard Ben Smith scored 17 points for Jacksonville, including a perfect 10 of 10 at the free throw line. Aric Brooks also scored 12 points for the Dolphins.
Jacksonville was effective at the free throw line, making 23 of 30 shots at the line, compared to just 12 of 19 for the Bears.0
Jacksonville never trailed after an 11-0 run in the first half that stretched out over 6:50 and turned an 11-9 deficit into a 20-11 Dolphins lead with 5:48 to play before halftime.
The Dolphins slowly lengthened the lead in the second half, going up by as many as 14 points with 16:40 to play.
Jacksonville also won the turnover battle, forcing 18 Bears turnovers while committing just 10.
