With so many young players forced onto the field in ‘07, the silver lining was the playing time the underclassmen now have under the belt going into ‘08.
That playing time has translated into a much improved Blue Devil defense.
“Defensively I feel like we’re as strong as we’ve been in a while,” said coach Karry Parker. “We did a few things different this summer to try and work on fundamentals and try and cut out some of the errors that we’ve had in the past. We’ll see if it works.”
The Devils have nine juniors and one senior, pitcher Meghan Cassedy. Cassedy will replace pitcher Brittany Raines on the mound, while Bridget Lee will also see time in the circle.
Junior Whitney Lucas, Erin Hice, Kristen Deal, Trinity Christian transfer Ashley Hart and Jenkins County transfer Kristen Chance are all key players to keep an eye on.
Parker said whomever is out there, staying focused mentally will be key for SHS.
“(We have to) mentally stay stronger than we’ve been in the past,” said Parker. “We beat ourselves sometimes. I feel if we stay strong mentally — we have the capability of playing with any team.”
Statesboro is scheduled to open the season today at Ware County, but inclement weather may force a cancellation of that game. The Devils will return home all weekend for the Battle in the Boro tournament at Mill Creek.
The Battles will feature 16 teams from around the state starting Friday and running all day Saturday.
