Local Roundup: Eagles face Elon in SoCon semis

    Georgia Southern men's soccer will face Elon for the second-consecutive year in the SoCon Tournament Semifinals today. The Eagles took a 1-0 win over UNCG in the opening round last weekend behind a 65th minute penalty kick goal from Witt Carlisle.
    The game starts at 5:30 p.m., from Furman's Stone Stadium and can be seen live on SoCon TV on Georgia Southern is the No. 6 seed in the tournament with a 9-9-0 overall record. The second-seeded Elon Phoenix are 13-4-2 on the season and receiving votes in the most-recent NSCAA national coaches poll.
    Earlier this week three Eagles were picked to the All-SoCon First Team for their play this season. Hunter Norton, Reed Norton and Witt Carlisle picked up the honor. Freshman Jeremy Rector earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team after scoring three goals this season.

GSU golf inks 3
    Georgia Southern Director of Golf and men’s head golf coach Larry Mays announced Thursday that Archer Price (Gastonia, N.C./Gaston Day), Jake Storey (Alnwick, England/Duchess Community High School) and Andrew Klasing (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kill/Central Alabama Community College) have all signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Georgia Southern and play for the Eagles, beginning in the 2014-15 season.
    Price is currently ranked 38th in the country in the 2014 high school class in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and won the North Carolina 2A individual state championship in 2010 and 2013.
    Storey is currently ranked 123rd in the European Golf Ranking and a member of England’s National Team.
    Klasing is a junior transfer from Central Alabama Community College. He posted three top-10 finishes last summer, including tying for sixth in the US Amateur Qualifier at the Crabapple Course in Atlanta.

Lady Gators take 2 to open season
    BELLVILLE – The Bulloch Academy Lady Gators kicked off their 2013-14 basketball season Tuesday with a 61-23 victory over Edmund Burke in the Pinewood Lady Patriot Kickoff tournament.
    Pate Lomax scored 16 points, Ashley Burke netted 13 and Chelsea Oglesby chipped in 10.
    On Thursday, the Gators (2-0) defeated Westfield 37-28. Burke scored 10 for BA and Mikay Sands added 7. The Gators took a three-point halftime lead and played keepaway for the final two quarters.

Eagles face Western Carolina
    Georgia Southern volleyball finishes the regular season by playing host to Western Carolina Friday night and Appalachian State Saturday afternoon.
    The Eagles need a combination of two wins and a Furman loss to capture their second consecutive Southern Conference regular-season title. Georgia Southern and Furman are tied for first, but the Paladins own the tiebreaker, having swept the season series from the Eagles.
    Samford is in second place, a game behind, and the Bulldogs play host to Furman Friday night. The Paladins meet Chattanooga Sunday.
    Regardless of its finish, Georgia Southern has clinched a spot in the eight-team SoCon Tournament Nov. 22-24, at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
