Things just keep getting better for the two at the top.

No. 1 Appalachian State and No. 7 Wofford still haven’t lost a Southern Conference game yet, and lately, both are having trouble even finding a challenge.

Wofford (7-1, 5-0 Southern Conference) dismantled The Citadel 35-0 in the second-straight shutout for the Bulldogs.

"We put 35 points on the board but we probably left two or three more on the field that we could have gotten," said WC coach Mike Ayers. "It was a good day. We did much better in the kicking game and it was as close to a complete game as we have had in a while. I really respect the Citadel and they came in and fought us. We were blessed today to come out on top. It is a great win and another one that we are going to enjoy tonight, but there is another one looming. We know what we have to do and we know the challenge is difficult. The thing that we were able to do was play a lot of guys and give a lot of guys a little bit of rest."

The Terriers face Samford (4-4, 2-3) on the road Saturday at 3 p.m.

Appalachian State comes to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern (4-4, 2-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. for the Eagles’ homecoming in Paulson Stadium.

A moral victory

Appalachian State hosted Furman (4-4, 2-3) Saturday winning 37-26. It was the ninth time ASU defeated the Paladins in the last 10 matchups, but Furman wasn’t discouraged.

"A lot of positives come from this," said Furman linebacker Kadarron Anderson after the game. "They are the number one team in the nation, they were supposed to kill us. Just going out there showing them what we can do, we come away with a lot of good things.

"Hopefully something will happen to get us in the playoffs. We are just trying to win out and that is all we can control."

The Paladins host Western Carolina (2-6, 1-4) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.

"In tracking the SoCon this year," said FU coach Bobby Lamb, "Western has done a great job of getting better every week. They have done a good job and we will get their best shot. We just have to keep improving and try and get over the hump here in the last few games."

A positive attitude

Elon (3-5, 2-3) won a convincing shootout Saturday on the road at Chattanooga, taking down the No. 20 Mocs 49-35 including scoring 21 points in the second quarter.

Elon coach Pete Lembo has done his best to keep the Phoenix positive throughout the season’s slow start.

"I am happy for our kids because they have been really resilient through this whole thing," Lembo said after Saturday’s win. "A lot of teams, at this point, would have just put it on cruise control, came in here and got their doors blown off by a good team today."

Things won’t get any easier for the Mocs Saturday, when they hit the road to face No. 3 (FBS) Auburn at 1 p.m.

Taking notes

When Elon travels to The Citadel (2-7, 0-6) Saturday at 2 p.m., the Bulldogs will follow the lead of the league’s other two option teams.

"They line up in the 50-front," Bulldogs coach Kevin Higgins said about Elon, "so we know what we are getting from them defensively. Georgia Southern had success running the ball against them and they made some changes and did better against Wofford. We're watching both tapes to see what they might do from an adjustment standpoint."
