BAY DISTRICT -- Mr. Leon B. Bunkley, age 77, passed away Friday, August 10, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Mr. Bunkley was born March 11, 1941, in Savannah to the late Leondis B. and Neva Bazemore Bunkley.
He was a member of the graduating class of 1959 at Southeast Bulloch High School and served in the United States Navy as a medical corpsman in Beaufort, San Diego and Guam.
Mr. Bunkley served 13 years at Bulloch Memorial Hospital as a medical lab technologist and retired with 17 years of service as lab director at Candler County Hospital.
He initiated the diabetic support group at Candler County Hospital, was very involved in the Southeast Bulloch Class of 1959 luncheons and was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church.
He enjoyed salt-water fishing and shrimping and loved to garden and can his produce for his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bunkley was predeceased by his daughter, Teresa Ann Bunkley Blevins; brother, Cyril Bunkley; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mahlon and Myrtle Jones; and brother-in-law, Donald Foltyn.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Marcia “Marcy” Bunkley of Pembroke; daughter and son-in-law, Colette and Wade Wehunt of Zebulon, N..C; sisters and brother-in-law, Claire Foltyn and Ann and Julian Deal of Bay District; grandchildren, Dallas and Justin Anderson of Bulloch County, Hailey Ansley of Gibson, Breanna and Nick Santucci, Makenzie and Scott Staples and Cam Wehunt, all of Zebulon, N.C.; nieces and nephews, Sheila and Brad Harris, Neal Bunkley, Jenny Roach, Sue and Mark Lee, James “Buster” and Kim Foltyn, Judith Ann and Mike Shuman, Cami Felix and Cassandra Jones; son-in-law, Mark Blevins; aunts, Bessie Bazemore and Neta Hagan; eight grandchildren and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2018, in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Elder Mike Newman officiating. Interment will follow in Lawrence Cemetery, with military honors.
