Hours after a woman was fatally shot Monday afternoon at a Highway 301 South residence, a few miles from the Evans County line, sheriff's investigators were still questioning witnesses as well as a "person of interest" in the case.
Bulloch County sheriff's Chief Deputy Jared Akins said no charges had been filed against anyone as of
7 p.m. Monday, but investigators, as well as the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, were busy reviewing evidence and speaking with people who were at the scene of the fatal shooting.
Akins said it could be later in the evening or Tuesday morning before the victim's identity is released and charges, if any, are brought.
When he spoke to the Statesboro Herald around
7 p.m. Monday, Akins said the person of interest was still at the sheriff's office but had not been arrested or even named a suspect at that time. He did not identify the individual.
Bulloch County sheriff's deputies, Bulloch County EMS and Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to the residence in the
500 block of Highway 301 South around 12:45 p.m. Monday, he said.
There, deputies found the body of the victim, who apparently died from a gunshot wound. Citing the ongoing investigation, Akins did not disclose further details of the shooting. He said the person who reportedly fired the shot lived in the same residence as the victim.
The Statesboro Herald will publish further details as they become available.
