A round up of people wanted on felony charges ended in 21 arrests Tuesday, and more may be coming.

Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson said the United States Marshal’s Service assisted Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies in a sweep throughout the county for offenders wanted on felony and other warrants. Some were arrested on misdemeanors after being found in violation when law enforcement officers were searching for the felony violators, he said.

“Sheriff’s offices in Georgia are charged by statute with enforcing orders of the courts, including the service of arrest warrants,” he said in a release issued Tuesday. “As part of that ongoing effort, BCSO deputies paired with task force agents from the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force …to serve multiple felony warrants throughout Bulloch County.”

The sweep began around 3 a.m., when “arrest teams

fanned out from Portal to Stilson and all points in between searching for persons wanted for felony probation violations, superior court bench warrants, and outstanding felony criminal warrants,” he said. “During the course of these efforts, many of the wanted persons or their associates were found to be in possession of drugs or committing other crimes and were charged accordingly.”

The Statesboro-Bulloch Crime Suppression Team will prosecute any additional crimes which resulted from the warrants sweep, he said. “To speed up the process of transporting the arrestees, jail deputies worked in roving transport vans to move the prisoners back to the jail from their arrest locations.”

Anderson said he appreciates the assistance from the U.S. Marshals’ Service.

“These joint sweeps will continue to be a part of

(our) efforts to aggressively pursue wanted persons. Serving active arrest warrants is the best way of ensuring that criminals are not free to commit other crimes in our community,” he said.
