On Friday, area residents can “Eat Fresh” and support United Way’s Subway Challenge at each of the six restaurant locations in Statesboro and Brooklet.
Community volunteers assigned to different stores will compete against each other to sell the most sandwiches for their particular location. Subway is donating 100 percent of all sales and donations from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. to United Way.
“This is the first year the Subway Challenge proceeds will help the United Way campaign,” says Gary Davis, owner/operator of Subway in Bulloch County. “Previously, the proceeds went to another charity and this year we were looking for a new charity to partner with to execute the Subway Challenge. United Way is the perfect fit because it addresses local needs, which are important to many people in our community.”
Teams are competing in creative ways.
“Team United Way,” dubbed the Unifiers and led by team captain Lynda Williamson of Georgia Power, is using the power of the computer to sell the subs. “We are orchestrating a major email push plus social media marketing tactics on Facebook to gain momentum with our sandwich sales,” said Williamson.
Darron Burnette of Sea Island Bank, and leader of the Financial Frenzies team, has participated for five years in the challenge. The banker bemoans the fact his team has often come in second place in previous years.
“But I’m feeling like this is going to be our year for the big win with the great folks we have on our team,” he said, noting all the banks are encouraging their employees and customers to eat Subway.
