Police arrested Statesboro High School Principal Dr. Marty Waters on Friday on a charge that he failed to report sexual abuse of a child in a timely manner.

Waters was arrested during an investigation into reported sexual assaults last week by two SHS assistant coaches against two separate 16-year-old girls.

He was charged with failure to report child abuse, a misdemeanor, taken to the Bulloch County Jail and granted a $2,000 bond. He was in the process of being released from jail late Friday afternoon.

Statesboro police charged Waters, 41, of Nevils, with failure to report child abuse after "detectives learned Waters was informed as early as March of 2014 of suspected child abuse between assistant coach Jeffery Crowder (previously arrested) and a female student," Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said.

Police said they learned of the incident April 25. The investigation "revealed that Waters failed to report the suspected child abuse to the proper authorities in the time required by law," Turner said.

Crowder, 25, of Mike-Ann Drive, was jailed April 30 on felony sexual assault charges stemming from alleged inappropriate relations with a 16-year-old female student. He was an assistant girls soccer coach at Statesboro High.

Police were notified April 28 that another coach was allegedly involved with a different teenage student.

On May 1, SHS assistant football coach Luke Edward Parks, 26, of Jesup, turned himself in to police after warrants were issued for his arrest. He is charged with felony sexual assault as a result of reported inappropriate involvement with a 16-year-old girl. The cases are separate, Turner said.

"The Bulloch County Board of Education and the Central Office (have) cooperated fully with the Statesboro Police Department throughout the investigation," he said.

The school system will continue to cooperate with police "to ensure the safety of students and the integrity of the community," Bulloch County Schools Superintendent Charles Wilson said in a school system news release.

"We appreciate the Statesboro Police Department's professionalism and diligence in this matter," he said. "Once we have been provided with complete details ... we will determine more of what we can do as a school system as we move forward."

Waters was placed on administrative leave, and Wilson appointed one of the school's current assistant principals, Dr. Ken LeCain, to serve as acting principal. Waters has worked with Bulloch County Schools for 15 years, and was named SHS's principal in 2005, Wilson said.

"This investigation is ongoing, so as we follow the SPD's lead, no further information will be released at this time," the school system news release says.

Turner said after Parks was arrested last week that investigators still want to hear from others who might have been victims of the assistant coaches or who might have knowledge of the cases.

"The Statesboro Police Department needs to hear from any student that was contacted inappropriately, either in person or electronically, by Luke Parks or Jeffery Crowder," Turner said.
