Statesboro police arrested a man who they say fled store loss prevention agents Monday after shoplifting at Walmart.
According to incident reports, the man later identified as Edward James Strickland, 38, Church Street, abandoned his car after breaking several traffic laws as he continued to flee from police.
Strickland reportedly entered the store, concealed items and attempted to leave without paying for the merchandise. When loss prevention employees tried to stop him, he ran from the store and left the area in his car.
Reports stated that Strickland "then entered the roadway, failing to stop at multiple stop signs and red lights. The suspect failed to maintain his lane of travel, and entered and exited traffic recklessly. The suspect then fled the area."
Because of safety issues the chase was ended, but "Through further investigation, Officer Amanda Lane located and arrested ... Strickland on multiple charges including theft by shoplifting, felony fleeing and attempt to elude," failure to maintain lane, disobeying traffic control devices and seat belt violation, said Advanced Patrol Officer Justin Samples, the Statesboro police spokesman.
Strickland was taken to the Bulloch County Jail to await further court hearings, according to jail records.
