The threat of severe weather in Bulloch and surrounding counties begins to move in Saturday, with the chance of heavy thunderstorms, wind, possible hail and tornadoes increasing by Sunday, according to weather experts.
Bulloch County Public Safety Director Ted Wynn said county work crews will be on standby in case of weather damages, and advises residents to make a plan in case of tornadoes or straight line winds.
“Make sure you have a safe place to go,” he said. “You have time to plan for this and to think about the safest place in case of a tornado,”
The National Weather Service in Charleston, SC predicts an 80 percent chance of rain Saturday, with a high of 71 degrees and a low of 61 degrees. Severe weather can move in Saturday afternoon, Wynn said, but the chance of rough weather significantly increases Sunday. The National Weather Service website (noaa.gov) reported severe thunderstorms possible for the entire southern portion of Georgia Sunday, with a high of 76 degrees and a low of 51 degrees. Rain fall could continue into Monday with a 30 percent chance, according to the site.
“There is a lot of uncertainty” with predictions, Wynn said. “We’re keeping an eye on the potential for severe weather heading our way.”
The storms could bring up to 2 inches of rain in some areas. Large hail and tornadoes are possible. The chance of such is reason to have a preparedness plan ready, Wynn said.
The American Red Cross website (www.redcross.org) suggests setting aside water (for drinking and otherwise) and a supply of nonperishable food in case power is lost. Medications, hygiene supplies, first aid kits, and tools, as well as flashlights, should be handy.
