In working with agents from other agencies to solve a drug case, Statesboro Police arrested a man who was also wanted on rape charges.
Last week, the Statesboro Police Crime Suppression Unit worked with Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and the Savannah Regional Drug Enforcement Office regarding information on drug activity in Statesboro, said Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner.
As a result of the investigation, officers stopped a car on Chandler Road, and the passenger fled on foot.
The driver was detained near the vehicle but later released without charges, but SPD officers and Georgia Southern University Police pursued the passenger, later identified as Taj Jesse Jones, 20, Georgia Avenue.
Jones was arrested on charges of criminal attempt to possess marijuana with intent to distribute and other drug charges related to this case are pending, Turner said.
Jones also was wanted in connection to a June 5, 2011 rape at Campus Club Apartments, according to Statesboro Police Major Scott Brunson.
A warrant for Jones was issued in June after a police investigation, he said. According to police reports, the victim said she knew Jones as an acquaintance, but did not consent to sexual activity that occurred.
Jones is being held at the Bulloch County Jail without bond, awaiting further court procedures.
