A man accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old Portal girl was arrested this week, along with the teen herself, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.
Deputies responded Oct. 15 to a Pecan Grove, Portal residence in regard to a runaway juvenile. They discovered the girl had left with Evi Hernandez, 24, Mikell Street, Statesboro, he said.
Deputies searched for Hernandez to no avail, but upon receiving information the next day that the pair had returned to Portal, they went back to the Pecan Grove residence and arrested both.
After interviewing the teen, investigators learned there had been a “consensual sexual encounter” between her and Hernandez.
Further investigation supported the information that there was a relationship between the two, and Hernandez was charged with statutory rape and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, he said.
The teen was charged with unruly juvenile and runaway juvenile, Anderson said.
The girl was returned to parents, but Hernandez is being held without bond.
“There is reason to believe Hernandez is not a legal resident of the United States,” he said. “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been notified of his arrest. Anyone with information on this case may contact Inv. Jared Akins at (912) 764-1789.”
