Husband and wife team Brianne and Corey Ackerly have relocated to Statesboro from New York to open Primos Italian Pizza Kitchen.
Located at 609-9 Brannen Street, Primos sits beside SNAP Fitness. The Ackerly's both grew up in upstate New York and have been in the restaurant business most of their adult lives. However, it was Corey who discovered rural Georgia after college and fell in love with the area.
After graduating with a degree in graphic design in New York, Corey accepted a job in Savannah and relocated there more a decade ago. While working and living in the south, he saw a need for an authentic New York-style pizzeria.         He eventually opened a one in Rincon and operated it for a little over a year before moving back to Andes, N.Y., to purchase a restaurant there in 2006.
The restaurant he purchased in New York was a diner named Woody's Country Kitchen. Woody's was managed by Brianne, who would later become his wife.
"I have teased him that he could have just asked me out on a date, it would have been much cheaper than buying the restaurant," joked Brianne.
Four years ago they opened "The Village Pizza," their second restaurant, in Delhi, N.Y. This was a traditional New York-style pizza restaurant.
After starting their family, Corey really longed to return to the south to raise his children.
"I finally convinced Brianne to at least take a road trip with me to see the area," he said. "She was certain that she did not want to live in Georgia. I purposely took her down old Highway 17 so she could experience the charm of the south. We have friends in Brooklet and when we arrived there she immediately fell in love with it. We spent the next few days visiting the area and we settled on living in the Brooklet area and opening our restaurant in Statesboro."
Once the decision was made to move south, they sold their home and both businesses in three weeks.
"Both of our families have worked in the restaurant industry so it is the business we know and love," Corey Ackerly said. "I worked my way through college hand tossing pizzas and fell in love with continuing this tradition. Here, we not only continue the tradition but also have the opportunity to introduce Statesboro to the many traditions of authentic New York-style pizza and Italian dishes. In addition to hand-tossing every pizza we use only the freshest ingredients possible and make everything from scratch. Continuing the New York tradition, we stone fire our pizzas."
Many of the recipes they use at Primos have been handed down for generations. Their menu includes everything from pizza and popular Italian dishes like chicken Marsala and lasagna to burgers, subs and wraps. Also, they offer pizza by the slice for clients in a hurry.
The restaurant seats a little more than 30 and Primos offers take out and free delivery within a 10-mile radius of the restaurant. Online ordering will be available soon through their website They can be reached at (912) 623-2200.
