In October 1977, ground was broken for a Wendy’s restaurant in Statesboro. A little more than a year later, on Nov. 14, 1978, community leaders cut the ribbon as Georgia Southern students and the community packed the opening of Wendy’s. The new restaurant was in walking distance of Hanner, at the corner of Fair Road and Zetterower and was an instant success.
Through innovations in marketing and product mix, 40 years later, Wendy’s on Fair Road remains one of Statesboro’s most popular restaurants.
Last week, Calhoun Management Corporation, the owner of the Statesboro Wendy’s broke ground on a second location in the Boro, between Enmarket and Hardees, on Northside Drive. When open, it will be Calhoun Management Corporation’s 60th Wendy’s franchise.
However, it will only be their third new Wendy’s built as a “concept” store in their group of restaurants. The first is in Macon and the second restaurant, number 59, is being constructed in Savannah on Whitebluff Road.
The new design was launched two years ago by Wendy’s known as the USB 55 concept. The 55-seat restaurant offers front-of-house features including a fireplace, open ceiling with up-lighting, flat-screen TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi and Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. The open kitchen allows guests to see their food being made. Features such as high-speed ovens, 30-pound fryers and double-sided grills are being installed to maximize efficiency. The store will have a single drive through.
The owners hope to have the new Wendy’s open around Nov. 1. The second location will offer the same hours as the original Wendy’s – 10 a.m.-2 a.m., seven days per week.
Calhoun plans to renovate the existing Wendy’s after the new Wendy’s is operational for about a year.
Calhoun Management Company is headquartered and operated out of Jasper, Ga. They also operate an accounting office in Clemson, S.C. The company was founded in 1997 with four Wendy’s in North Georgia. They purchased the Savannah group of restaurants three years ago from franchisee David Sovchen. This included 11 total restaurants, eight in Savannah proper and one each in Hinesville, Statesboro and Vidalia.
“Statesboro has been a very good market for Wendy’s,” said Pickens Lindsay, franchisee. “We have been watching the growth of the community and see the need to expand. All the major players, including McDonalds, Chick-Fil-A and Zaxby’s operate multiple locations successfully in the market. The density of the population and projected growth for Statesboro make this expansion a logical decision.”
Calhoun Management Corporation is currently interviewing for managers and will hire 40 new crew members in 60 days. Anyone interested in a job, should go to their website at www.wendyscmc.com and enter Statesboro in the location bar.
