Each year Rotary clubs around the world organize and take part in various activities and events centered on the theme of peace. In 2023, the Rotary Club of Downtown Statesboro dedicated a Peace Pole to the community to mark the International World Day of Peace.

On Saturday, the Downtown Rotary Club will host a community observance of the World Day of Peace at the site of the Peace Pole at the Main Street Farmers Market on South Main St. The Sept. 21 program will begin at 10 a.m.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly to support global ceasefire and non-violence. The UN states: “It is a day devoted to strengthening ideals of peace, above all differences, and to contribute to building a culture of peace. Peace Day is observed around the world on September 21.”

International students from Georgia Southern University and a local Boy Scout troop and Girl Scout troop will participate in the program.
