Legal assistant Lorna DeLoach edged out challenger Charlie Aaron, a Statesboro attorney, Tuesday night in a tight race to win the position for Bulloch County Probate Court judge.

DeLoach, who has been a legal assistant for more than 30 years, garnered 3,030 votes to Aaron’s 2,820. She will replace current Probate Judge Lee DeLoach, who decided not to run again after 30 years in the position.

In the May 24 general primary, DeLoach pulled in 3,197 votes to Aaron’s 2,906 votes in a field of five.

“I am so thankful that the Lord allowed me this opportunity and that the citizens of Bulloch County allowed me this opportunity,” she said Tuesday night after learning of her win. “I am humbled and overwhelmed. I am going to go in and do an awesome job for the citizens of Bulloch County.”

Aaron acknowledged the close race.

“We had a good campaign, but we came up a little short,” he said. “I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way. I am very grateful.”

DeLoach has 33 years of experience as a paralegal. In previous interviews, she said her "love for people" is what drove her to seek election as probate judge.

DeLoach is married to John "Corbett" DeLoach, who she said is a distant cousin of current Probate Judge Lee DeLoach.

DeLoach attended Georgia Southern College, and after leaving in 1983, she was employed with various law firms in Savannah. During that time, she took paralegal classes at the Coastal Georgia Center (under Armstrong State University/Georgia Southern).

In 1988, she began working as a legal assistant in Statesboro and has worked for three law firms over the course of 28 years, focusing on wills, estate planning and real estate.

DeLoach is a 32-year resident of Bulloch County, and her husband is a native and local business owner. They have three sons, Ryan (Carmen) Hynko, Justin Hynko and Devon (Lauren) DeLoach, and one grandson, Jason Hynko.

She is a 2005 graduate of Leadership Bulloch and past member of the Statesboro Exchange Club and the Statesboro Junior Woman's Club.
