A local child care worker will not return to work after being charged with child cruelty in an incident Thursday at Kidovations Educational Experience.

Damon Cynque Banks, 19, was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree child cruelty, according to Statesboro police reports.

Statesboro police Community Information Specialist Madison Warren said Banks, of a Burkhalter Road address, reportedly shoved a 4-year-old child, who fell and struck a bookshelf, resulting in visible injuries.

Tina Banks, owner of the Stambuk Lane facility and Damon Banks' mother, said Monday that the child did not strike a bookshelf but denied further comment except to say her son no longer works at the center and "I am really sorry this incident happened."

Damon Banks was taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where he is being held without bond, according to jail records.
