The Statesboro Police Department is seeking volunteers for its Handicapped Parking Enforcement Program.
There are currently three vacancies for the unpaid, volunteer positions, said Statesboro Police Sgt. Jake Saxon.
Citizen volunteers whose applications are accepted will be able to issue citations within the City of Statesboro for violations of the Parking for Persons with Disabilities law.
Those selected for the positions will be provided a citation book, digital camera and traffic vest, he said. The job is at the volunteer’s discretion regarding hours worked, and it is not a paid position. The program began in November 2015
“It’s a problem everyone has,” Saxon said, referring to people parking in handicap parking spaces who are not handicapped and do not have a handicap tag. “This is a way to engage and involve the community and try to resolve the problem.”
Volunteers are just that, and not certified police officers. The volunteers will be able to issue citations for handicap parking violations only, he said.
The fine for illegally parking in a handicap parking space is $190, he said.
Applications can be picked up at the Police Department at 25 West Grady Street. Applicants will be screened through a background check. For more information call (912) 764-9911.
