When employees of a South Main Street bank returned to work Tuesday after a three-day weekend, they found the bank had been burglarized.
Statesboro police officers responded around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to Heritage Bank of the South on South Main Street in reference to the reported burglary, Statesboro Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said.
"After a thorough search of the bank, Statesboro police officers did not locate anyone inside the building," he said. "An undisclosed amount of U.S. currency is missing, according to bank officials."
The burglary is similar to one that occurred July 30 at Farmers & Merchants Bank on North Main Street, and from which also an undisclosed amount of money was taken. Police are still investigating that incident.
No further details are being released at this time, he said.
"This case is currently under investigation by the Statesboro Police Department Investigations Bureau," Turner said. "Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact the Detective Ben Purvis at the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911."
