The Bulloch County Sheriff's Office issued a "be on the lookout" alert for a sex offender who it says failed to register after being released from prison.

Darwaugh Lee Royals, 60, was convicted of rape in Bulloch County in 1994. He was released from prison on May 21 and was last seen in Screven County, where he has family, according to the sheriff's office alert.

He also has relatives in Bulloch County.

Georgia's Sex Offender Registry website lists Royals with an address at Central State Prison in Macon.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jared Akins said Bibb County issued the alert because Royals failed to register anywhere after being released from prison. The online Sex Offender Registry did not list Royals as an absconder Friday afternoon, but Akins said it will probably take until early next week for the state's information to be updated.

According to the registry, Royals is described as a black male, 5 feet 5 inches, 140 pounds, with gray or partially gray hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who spots Royals in Bulloch County should contact sheriff's Capt. Todd Hutchens at (912) 764-1787 or dispatch at (912) 764-1771.
