A Bulloch County jury will hear testimony this week from one of four men charged in the Oct. 14, 2006 murder of a Statesboro man. The trial of Marcus Maurice Benbow, 39, Waycross, begins Wednesday.

            Benbow and three others are accused of involvement in what investigators believe was a drug deal gone bad. The shootout in an Orange street apartment last fall resulted in the death of Corey Oneil Walker, 21, whom police said was killed by two shots from a semi-automatic weapon.

            Two others were also shot during the incident. James L. Williams, 43,  was struck twice while Chalandria McClouden, 30, was struck by  bullet fragments, according to reports.

            Also charged in the shootings were Frederico Mikell, 30, Grady Street Extension, Statesboro; and Bryan Lazarus Hughley, 35, Waycross, said Ogeechee Judicial Circuit Assistant District Attorney Daphne Jarriel.

            Kendall Worthy, 20, Waycross, pled guilty to charges earlier this year.

            The suspects will all be tried separately, she said.

            Investigators believe Benbow, Worthy and Hughley came to Statesboro, met with Mikell and went to buy drugs. The shooting was a possible robbery attempt, Statesboro Police Det. Tommy Brown said shortly after the shooting incident. Brown and  Det. James Winskey handled the investigation.

             Brown said crime lab reports from an autopsy revealed Walker suffered two shooting injuries - one to his stomach area and another to the upper torso. The death was ruled homicide, he said.
