Upcoming elections could see new mayors for two Bulloch County towns. The Brooklet and Portal mayoral seats are open for qualifying, and several council seats for those towns as well as Register are also open for qualifying for the pending election. Qualifying began Monday.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, only two people had qualified to run for several seats up for election in these three municipalities. Jennifer Motes, incumbent Portal City Council member, qualified to run again for the seat she holds, Post 5, according to Portal City Clerk Mike Arrieta.

Other seats up for election in Portal are council Post 2, held by incumbent Clint Lovett, and the mayor's seat, currently held by incumbent Larry Motes.

Councilman Billy Boggs also qualified Monday evening to run for the mayor's seat, Arrieta said.

In Register, no one qualified Monday for the following seats: Seat 3, held by incumbent Kevin C. Boyd; Seat 4, held by Elaine Lee; and Seat 5, held by Ann Ross.

Monday, no one had qualified for several seats in Brooklet, either, said assistant clerk Belle Gay.

Incumbent Mayor William Hendrix's seat is up for election, as are council Post 1, held currently by incumbent Randy Newman; Post 2, held by incumbent Russell Davis; and Post 5, which will be vacated by Tom McElwee, who resigned the position.

Qualifying for the seats up for election will run until 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jones said.
