Keep Bulloch Beautiful and Anderson’s General Store want to “chip” in and help you get your house back in order after the holidays.
Bring One for the Chipper, the state’s annual Christmas tree recycling program, invites you to bring your tree to Anderson’s General Store on January 5th or to any Bulloch County recycling center from Dec. 26-Jan. 4 for a voucher for a free Dogwood seedling in exchange for their Christmas tree.
Bring your voucher or tree to Anderson’s General Store in Statesboro or the City of Brooklet Public Works Building on January 5 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. to receive your seedling. You can also exchange your tree for free mulch.
“For 18 years, Georgia citizens have enthusiastically supported our ‘Bring One for the Chipper’ program. Many families view the trip to the drop-off center as an annual holiday tradition,” said Mike Beatty, Commissioner- Georgia’s Department of Community Affairs. “In 2007 we collected and recycled more than 240,000 trees. We’re calling on Georgia’s families to help us exceed last year’s numbers.”
Chipper trees will be turned into mulch for playgrounds, public beautification projects, wildlife habitat, and homeowner landscaping projects.
“Chipper also provides a great opportunity for parents to talk to their children about the importance of caring for the environment. Bulloch County residents are encouraged to support their Keep Georgia Beautiful affiliate and participate in environmental projects all year round.
"Our children are never too young to learn about caring for our beautiful state,” he said.
Keep Georgia Beautiful, The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Company and 11-Alive, the state sponsors, are proud to offer a token of appreciation for Georgia citizens who participate in the Jan. 5 “Chipper” event. While supplies last, “recycling” citizens will receive a free dogwood seedling. For tips on caring for your seedling please visit www.KeepGeorgiaBeautiful.org
These sponsors are projected to donate money and in-kind services valued at more than $100,000 towards this statewide recycling project.
Since 1991, “Bring One for the Chipper,” has collected over 4.8 million trees and provided over one million tree seedlings to participants. The program produces tangible environmental benefits while helping local governments comply with state regulations that prohibit the disposal of yard trimmings in lined municipal landfills.
Keep Bulloch Beautiful also offers other ways to reduce waste during the holiday season. For those getting new electronics, they can recycle the old ones at the City Center Recycling Center. Usable items can also be donated to Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity. Also, many gifts come in cardboard boxes. To help save room in the trash can, those boxes can be broken down and taken to any recycling center.
