A Statesboro Police detective reacted quickly to a call about a burglary in progress and nabbed the suspect in a matter of minutes, said Statesboro Police Capt. Scott Brunson.
Jordy Melvin, 20, Oak Street, Claxton, ended up behind bars on charges of burglary and possession of tools for the commission of a crime, he said.
Det. Keith Holloway was patrolling on Fair Road Thursday around 2:50 p.m. when he heard a Central 911 dispatcher radio a call about a burglary in progress at Copper Beech Townhouses, he said.
While responding to the area, Holloway saw a man fitting the description of the burglary suspect running in the area behind Sonny's Barbecue, he said. He stopped the black male wearing a black backpack, and after other detectives and officers arrived to assist, took the suspect into custody.
A female victim, who had been entering her Copper Beech Town House apartment at the same time Melvin was coming in through the back door, positively identified Melvin as the man in her home, Brunson said.
Police also found items in Melvin's possession that linked him to another burglary, he said.
Statesboro Police Det. Ken Scott was investigating a burglary that occurred Thursday at Campus Club Apartments, he said. Melvin was charged in this case as well.
Also found in Melvin's possession was a box containing costume jewelry and a pair of tennis shoes. Anyone with information regarding the burglaries or who may have had similar items stolen is asked to contact Holloway at 764-9911.
