A gang-related confrontation between teenagers at Park Place Apartments on Saturday ended with one 19-year-old and a younger juvenile under arrest.

Carl Bernard Heath, 19, of Pine Street, was arrested on charges of criminal street gang activity, first-degree cruelty to children, felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor and simple battery, according to Bulloch County Jail reports.

A juvenile faces similar charges as well, said Statesboro police Sgt. Jake Saxon.

"The incident appears to be gang related," he said.

Statesboro police responded to Park Place Apartments on Lanier Drive near the Georgia Southern University campus around 10 p.m. Saturday, where a juvenile victim told them Heath and two other juveniles had attacked him. He said he was struck by the offenders, and "a shot was reportedly fired," Saxon said. No one was injured by gunshots.

The third juvenile had left the scene and was unable to be located, but Heath and the other juvenile offender were arrested and taken to the Bulloch County Jail.

The juvenile victim declined medical treatment of injuries, Saxon said.

Park Place Apartments has been under scrutiny recently due to what some call excessive crime, including gang-related shootings. The city of Statesboro plans a meeting soon with property owners and concerned citizens, but a date for the meeting has not yet been set.
