Melissa Newsome-Akins of Claxton and Mr. and Mrs. Dave Akins of Swainsboro, Georgia, announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Akins of Statesboro, to John Anthony Kerbo, son of Dorita Kerbo and Donn Kerbo, both of Garfield, Georgia.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Dolly Newsome of Swainsboro and the late David Newsome, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hutchinson of Adrian, Georgia, and Mr. and Mrs. Randy Akins of Statesboro. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Curl of Swainsboro, the late Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Newsome of Kite, Georgia, the late Mr. and Mrs. Lynwood Mincey of Twin City, Georgia, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Rayford Akins of Statesboro. Lauren is currently enrolled in the radiologic technology program at Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro and is a 2015 honor graduate of Emanuel County Institute in Twin City.

The groom-elect is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hendley of Garfield and the late Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Kerbo of Tampa, Florida. He is the great-grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hendley of Garfield, the late Mr. and Mrs. Mason McKinney of Millen, Georgia, and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Kerbo and the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Oliphant, all of Tampa. John is a 2014 graduate of Emanuel County Institute in Twin City and is currently employed at Great Dane in Statesboro.

The couple will exchange vows on March 16, 2019, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Garfield.

A reception will follow in the church social hall.
