Sylvania’s Orinthal Striggles and Statesboro’s Kathy Wiegand were the overall male and female winners of the 5th annual Jingle Bell Reindeer 5K Run recently.
The event, a 3.1—mile race on a USATF—certified course through the heart of historic downtown Statesboro, drew 130 runners. Striggles, 30, ran an incredible 15:37.9 for the win while Wiegand, 32, won the race for the second consecutive year, posting a time of 20:02.6. She bettered her time by 13 seconds. Both received specially—designed Reindeer Run Christmas ornaments and pocketed $100 in cash.
In the Masters category (age 40 and above), Mike Desmelik, 41, posted a 17:10.0 for the win while Mimi Potter, 40, of Statesboro took the female division with a 24:26.8. Both received an ornament and $100 in cash.
The race is an annual community event, affiliated with the Downtown Holiday Celebration. All proceeds from the race will benefit local charities.
Community sponsors of the event were Sea Island Bank, East Georgia Diagnostic Services, Coca Cola, Harvey’s and the Statesboro Service League. Volunteers included members of the Statesboro Service League and numerous Bulloch Academy high—school students.
The top three runners in each age group received the ornaments while all entrants received a t—shirt. While there was no Best Costume award, Statesboro High School senior Paul Welle dressed as Rudolph the Red—Nosed Reindeer and ran the race with a ‘sleigh’ full of Christmas presents.
