METTER — The Screven County Gamecocks (5-1, 1-0 Region 3-AA) lit up the Metter Tigers to the tune of 88-49 in the Friday’s region opener for both schools.
Demarius Mercer led the Tigers (1-3, 0-1) with 13 points, while four Gamecocks reached double digits.
Dajuwan Carter led the way with 16 points and six rebounds, followed by Antrjuan Albright (15 points), Bennie Washington (11 points) and Jamez Colbert (10 points).
Screven knocked in eight threes on the night, to compliment its fast-paced gameplan.
“We play an up-tempo style,” said Gamecock coach Arthur Davis. “Instead of going and laying the ball up, we like to go behind that three-point line. We try to get as many possessions as we can, and take as many shots as we can. That’s the benefit to being an athletic team. It’s a plus for us.”
After taking a 44-22 halftime lead, SCHS put on a clinic in the third quarter, out-scoring the Tigers 32-12 and scoring in a number of different ways.
Six of Screven’s eight 3’s came in the period, where the team amassed six steals. The quarter was highlighted by an inbound ally-oop from Bennie Washington to Carter.
In the second, the Gamecocks racked up 11 points in 1:13 including a pair of 3’s by Fabalous Mills and a behind-the-back, fast-break assist from Trent Roberts to Mills.
Davis is glad his Boys had a chance to go up 1-0 in the region, as theyhost 2006 Region 3-AA defending Champion Josey tonight. The win, said Davis, should be a boost for the Gamecocks.
“You want to start off on a positive note,” said the SCHS coach, “so we felt good getting the win. Hopefully we are heading in the right direction.
The girls tip off against Josey at 6 p.m. and the boys get started at 7:30 in Sylvania.
Lady Gamecocks 41, Lady Tigers 26
The Metter Lady Tigers (2-2, 0-1 Region 3-AA) shot only 5-19 from the free throw line as the Screven County Lady Gamecocks (4-1, 1-0) grabbed their first region win in a 41-26 throttling Friday in Metter.
The Tigers jumped on top early in a defensive first quarter and led 10-8 heading into the second. Screven ran its full-court press almost exclusively throughout the game and it started to wear on MHS. The Gamecocks outscored Metter 12-2 in the second and never looked back.
“We’ve got to make something happen,” said Screven coach Roy Cooper about the Gamecock’s full-court defensive attack. “That’s what it’s for. To get turnovers, make them throw it away – anything we can get from them.”
It worked well for the Lady Gamecocks as they grabbed 15 steals in the contest.
Metter’s Tess Fordham led all scorers putting down 11 points to go with her seven rebounds, and Artavia Zeigler led the Gamecocks with nine points and eight rebounds.
Starting conference play with a win was important for Cooper and his Gamecocks.
“Very important,” agreed the coach. “It is a good confidence builder for the girls.”
