BROOKLET — The Screven County Gamecocks survived a fight Friday night in Brooklet. In the end, it would come down to turnovers, and Southeast Bulloch had just too many of them.
Antrjuan Albright’s game-high 18 led all scorers and a deep SCHS bench helped Screven to a 59-46 win over SEB (2-12, 0-4).
“We know that Southeast Bulloch is real tough at home,” said Screven head coach Arthur Davis. “We knew that they weren’t going to give up. My guys stayed poised and we were able to get some easy scoring opportunities.”
The Yellow Jackets trailed for most of the game despite cutting the lead to 45-37 after a Tony Raymond 3 at the 6:10 mark of the fourth quarter. It would be as close as SEB would get in the final frame, as the Yellow Jackets failed to score over the next 2:43, ending hopes of any comeback. Southeast just couldn’t dig themselves out of an early hole created by too many turnovers.
“We cut (the turnovers) in half it’d be close, at least within striking distance,” said SEB’s John Page.
Southeast threw away the ball 11 times in the first half, eight more than their visitors from Sylvania. It helped the Gamecocks (6-7, 2-1) to an early 6-1 lead and 18-10 advantage after one quarter.
“I told them at the beginning ‘Let’s not play a fast-paced game because that’s what they want to do. Let’s slow it down and try to execute,’” Page added. “Screven’s a good ball club and they executed when they had to.”
The Yellow Jackets shot 50 percent during the first half, but limited opportunities kept them from gaining any ground on the scoreboard. Screven, meanwhile, put up 30 shots while turning the ball over just three times. Coming out of the locker room with a 32-23 lead, Davis turned to his bench.
“Our bench really played big for us,” said Davis. “I told them we were going to try to play a lot of people. It was a warm night and we were trying to keep everybody fresh. I was extremely proud of the bench tonight.”
Screven opened up a 43-28 lead in the third thanks in part to names like Brandon Pridgen, Bennie Washington, Maurice Perry and Trent Roberts, who all contributed in the second half.
Tony Raymond led SEB with 17 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. Yellow Jacket James Scott was held to just five points on 2 of 8 shooting.
Lady Gamecocks 56, Lady Yellow Jackets 10
The Lady Gamecocks of Screven (12-1, 3-0) didn’t give Southeast Bulloch much of a chance Friday night. As SEB struggled to find its shot on offense, SCHS used defense to create plenty of fastbreak buckets and run away from the Jackets for a 56-10 win.
“Tonight we pretty much put on a defensive clinic,” said Screven coach Jennifer Acree. “I’m extremely proud of the defensive effort we gave from the top player all the way to the tenth player we played.”
Southeast Bulloch (5-6, 1-3) shot just 3-for-41 from the field and turned the ball over 36 times.
“The press wasn’t that difficult for us,” SEB head coach Milton Williams.
“We just got into a turnover mode and then lost all confidence.”
Kadedra Evans led the Gamecocks with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Evans registered a double-double before the first half ended and gave way to Kiki Warren who also added 14 points. Brittany Carter and Lauren Akins had five each for SEB.
Southeast Bulloch travels to Augusta today to face Josey at 5 p.m. Screven County will return home where it will entertain the Tigers of Swainsboro.
