Local Roundup: SHS tourney game moved to Saturday

    The Statesboro Blue Devils' game against Wayne County, originally scheduled for today, hasd been moved to Saturday at 1 p.m., at Womack Field, due to factors involving weather and the scheduling of officials.
    The game will be the semifinals of the boys Region 3-AAAA tournament, which the top-seeded Blue Devils reached with a 7-0 win over Cross Creek on Wednesday.

Blue Devils heading to state
    WAYNESBORO — The Statesboro Blue Devils boys tennis team defeated No. 2 seed Burke County on Thursday to reach the Class AAAA state playoffs.
    The Devils fell to No. 1 seed South Effingham in the semifinals, but defeated No. 1 Richmond Academy in the consolation match to earn the No.  3 seed at state. The Blue Devils were led by Todd Gilchrist, Mitchell Mays and Nathan Lucas, who each finished 2-1 on the day.
    Statesboro will face No. 2 seed Americus-Sumpter on the road in the first round of the state playoffs on Tuesday.

Portal hammers Claxton
    CLAXTON  — The Portal Panthers (12-9) scored nine runs in the sixth inning to propel to a 16-6 win over Claxton on the road Thursday.
    Evan Street (4-for-4) drove in four runs, including a two-run homer, and Jake Brown (3-for-5) also drove in four.
    Cole Busby struck out six while allowing five runs in five innings, and Street allowed an unearned run while striking out three in the sixth.
    Portal returns to action today at 5:30 p.m., at home against Wheeler County.
