Three Statesboro High School Lady Blue Devils had their moment on Senior Night against South Effingham on Tuesday night, but for a brief moment, an electric strike from a freshman stole the show.
With Statesboro clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the contest, the Devils desperately needed a win — and as large a goal differential as possible — to continue their march up the Region 2-AAAA standings.
That’s when Reagan Thomas saw her opportunity.
“I found some open space,” Thomas said. “I was in a spot where I could take the kind of shot that I like.”
With her back to the goal 20 yards away, Thomas received a pass, and in one quick motion, spun and fired. The result was a high, arching shot that soared over the Mustangs’ goalkeeper, took a left turn to get inside of the right goalpost, then dipped down just under the crossbar for a goal belonging on any highlight reel.
“I take those shots a lot in practice,” Thomas said. “I knew that I had hit that one pretty well.”
Now, armed with the momentum of two straight region wins, Thomas and the rest of the Devils will try to keep rolling over the final weeks of the regular season.
