Athlete of the Week: SHS seniors pursue state title
Statesboro

The Athlete of the Week feature is usually reserved for individuals, but the special bond between the senior class on Statesboro’s girls basketball team deserves to be recognized for what they have accomplished as a group.
Aneisha Drummer, Alisia Jenkins, Sierra Kirkland, Ericka McDade and Shanice Walker began their careers as freshmen with potential and are now looking to end their high school careers with a bang.
“We knew that we had something special four years ago,” Statesboro coach Jeff Seier said. “We had a group of girls that were young and raw, but had a ton of talent. It’s been fun to watch them grow into a very good team.”
Very good is a bit of an understatement as the Devils have advanced to the Elite Eight in each of the past two seasons and enter next week’s Region 2-AAAA tournament as the top seed.
Armed with a 24-1 record and a winning streak that stretches back to Dec. 19, Statesboro is currently ranked No. 2 in the state and wants to stick around a bit longer this postseason.
“We want to win state,” Jenkins said. “We know that we can win it. All of us seniors have worked hard and we want to go out on top.”
